Chat translation and the DeepL key
Turning it on and off
Chat translation is off by default. Once you turn it on, foreign-language chat is shown translated on the host’s screen, and translations are also sent to the players.
- To turn it on (any one of these): type
/opt translate.enabled onin the lobby chat; press “Chat translation” on the Chat page of the settings tab; or set[Translate] Enabled = truein the config file./opt translate offstops it again. - The engine can be Google (no key needed, default) or DeepL.
- For DeepL: get a DeepL API Free key (free tier: 500,000 characters per month), save only the key on a single line in
BepInEx\PocketRoles\deepl-key.txtinside the mod folder, then set the engine to deepl. Never send the key to anyone (it isn’t included in report zips).
What gets sent
Only while it is on is chat text sent to Google or DeepL for translation (while it is off, nothing is sent anywhere). When enabled, the welcome message tells players that translation is on; if you enable it with players already in the room, the same notice is sent to the room right away.
PCs updated from an older version
Up to v0.5.4 it started on, so on a PC updated from an older version it may still be on (Updating).
